Clogged Ducts & Mastitis Treatment
You Shouldn't Have to Suffer Through This. Relief Is Closer Than You Think.
You're already navigating the exhaustion of new motherhood, and now you're dealing with a hard, painful lump in your breast, engorgement that won't budge, or the fear that things are getting worse by the hour. Clogged ducts and mastitis can come on fast and feel overwhelming, especially when you're not sure what to do or who to call.
You don't have to just push through it. And you definitely don't have to keep googling "how to massage out a clogged duct" at 2am.
At Anchor Pelvic Physical Therapy, we offer gentle, evidence-based care that actually works, so you can get back to feeding your baby comfortably and feeling like yourself again, quickly.
Understanding What's Happening in Your Body
Clogged ducts happen when milk is unable to flow freely through the breast, leading to a buildup of pressure, inflammation, and that unmistakable tender lump. Left unaddressed, a clogged duct can progress into mastitis, an infection that brings fever, flu-like symptoms, and significantly more pain and recovery time.
The key is getting ahead of it early, and how you treat it matters just as much as how quickly you treat it.
Our Approach: Gentle, Effective, and Evidence-Based
Aggressive massage is one of the most common recommendations women receive for clogged ducts, and it's also one of the most counterproductive. Forceful manipulation can increase inflammation, damage tissue, and actually make things worse.
Our program takes a completely different approach. We use calm, targeted techniques designed to work with your body's natural healing process, not against it.
We use the following treatments in-clinic:
Therapeutic Ultrasound uses sound wave technology to gently reduce inflammation deep in the breast tissue, break up blockages, and restore comfortable milk flow without any painful manipulation.
Lymphatic Drainage uses light, precise touch to help your body move fluid, reduce swelling, and calm the inflammation driving your symptoms, naturally and effectively.
You've probably been told to massage it out. That's the exact opposite of what we recommend.
Aggressive massage can increase inflammation, damage breast tissue, and actually make things worse. Our approach is intentionally gentle and evidence-based, working with your body rather than forcing it.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
A clogged duct typically feels like a tender, hard lump in the breast, sometimes with localized redness or a decrease in milk output on that side. Mastitis usually involves those same symptoms plus flu-like feelings such as fever, chills, body aches, and more significant pain and redness. If you're running a fever, we encourage you to contact your doctor as well, as mastitis sometimes requires antibiotics alongside physical therapy treatment.
-
As soon as possible. Clogged ducts can progress to mastitis quickly, sometimes within 24 to 48 hours. The earlier we can see you, the better your chances of resolving it before it becomes a more significant problem. We do our best to get patients dealing with clogged ducts and mastitis in the same day because we know how fast things can escalate.

Therapeutic ultrasound uses sound wave technology to gently reduce inflammation and break up blockages deep in the breast tissue. It is non-invasive, painless, and has been used safely for the treatment of clogged ducts and mastitis in breastfeeding women for many years. It will not affect your milk or your baby.
